second day/ tweede dag

We went to bed really early yesterday evening. I think I slept at 9 and it was wonderful! I got up at 9 this morning and shortly after that Marloes woke up. We discussed if we would go back to bed or if we would go swimming. There is a huge swimming pool at the campus that we can use for free since we live here. We decided that this would be a good start (we want to swim at least 3 times a week) but that we first needed to eat something.

Gisteravond zijn we al heel vroeg naar bed gegaan. I sliep denk ik om 9 uur- het was heerlijk! Ik heb tot 9 uur vanmorgen geslapen en vlak daarna werd ook Marloes wakker. We hebben het er even over gehad of we nog terug naar bed gingen of gingen zwemmen. Er is echt een enorm zwembad op de campus waar we gratis gebruik van kunnen maken omdat we hier wonen. We besloten dat zwemmen wel een goed begin was (we willen nl. 3x per week gaan zwemmen, minstens), maar natuurlijk moesten we eerst wat eten.

We were having breakfast (coffee+ banana’s for me) on the stairs in front of our apartment. We tried to make a nice picture of us having breakfast, but it turned out a bit different because there was no-one to take our picture, so we had to be creativeJ

Hier hadden we ontbijt- bananen en koffie voor mij- op het trapje voor ons huis. We probeerden om een leuke foto van ons met ons ontbijt te maken, maar aangezien er niemand was om de foto te maken moesten we creatief zijn. De tralies op de achtergrond zijn onze voordeur.

In the meanwhile Renke was awake as well but didn’t want to go swimming so Marloes and I went swimming for about an hour and after that we tried to arrange several things as our student registration here at the university, so that we’ll get a student card and have access to the library (including internet) etc. This didn’t go as fast as we had hoped. The lady told us, without having asked our names or anything, that we were not in the system yet and that we had to go to the main campus to arrange this. So we had to walk over to the main campus (which is about an hour walk from here). Luckily we got a map and figured our way, we decided to take the for-sure-safe- way, which of course was the longest. But now we know a shorter way, so that it’s only 30 minutes:) It was a nice walk though, seen the Dutch Embassy- always useful to know. Walked over the Queen Wilhelmine lane (a former Dutch Queen)

Intussen was Renke ook wakker, maar wilde niet gaan zwemmen. Marloes en ik hebben een uur gezwommen. Daarna zijn we op stap gegaan om allerlei dingen, zoals onze student registrasie, te regelen, zodat we toegang krijgen tot oa de bibliotheek (waar ook internet is). Dit ging niet zo voorspoedig als we gehoopt hadden. Zonder onze namen of ook maar iets te vragen, vertelde de mevrouw ons al dat we nog niet in het systeem stonden en dus naar de hoofd campus moesten om dat te regelen. Dus moesten we naar de hoofdcampus lopen (ongeveer een uur). Gelukkig hadden we een kaartje gekregen en konden onze route uitstippelen. We besloten om de deze-weg-is-absoluut-veilig-route te nemen, die natuurlijk ook de langste was. Inmiddels weten we een kortere route, die ongeveer een half uur duurt.
Het was leuk om te lopen, we hebben de Nederlandse Ambassade gezien, over de Koningin Wilhelmina laan gelopen en allerlei interessante/mooie dingen gezien.
Everything here is guarded really well, but at the same time it’s really hard to miss the beauty of nature…

Alles is hier enorm goed beveiligd, maar tegelijkertijd is het moeilijk om de mooie natuur te missen…

We found the campus and did our things, we had to fill in a form and talked a bit to Sammy- who is arranging everything. Really interesting to talk with a black African person about the history of South Africa! This all took a while (and we’re still not done with everything, but well…) and in the meanwhile it started raining- so it’s not just sunny and warm here!! But it wasn’t so bad. We walked around and went to the mall where we had a really nice late lunch/early dinner at a fish restaurant and bought the stuff we still needed and walked back home again. I think we walked at least 2 hours in total this afternoon, so I have my workout for today! Now we’re just relaxing, created a coffee machine so that we can have real coffee instead of just instant coffee.

We hebben de campus gevonden en de dingen gedaan die we moisten doen. Intussen een beetje met Sammy gepraat- degene die alles regelt voor ons. Het is echt heel interessant om met een zwart iemand over de geschiedenis te praten! Dit alles duurde een tijdje en inmiddels was het begonnen met regenen- dus het is niet alleen maar zonnig en warm hier! Maar het was niet zo heel erg… We liepen nog een tijdje rond en hebben het winkelcentrum gevonden waar we een heerlijke late lunch/vroeg dinner hadden in een visrestaurant en de dingen gekocht hebben die we nog nodig hadden en zijn weer verder naar huis gelopen. Ik denk dat we in totaal wel zo’n twee uur rond gelopen hebben, dus ik heb goed aan mn conditie gewerkt! Nu zijn we een beetje aan het relaxen, hebben een koffie apparaat in elkaar gefabriekt zodat we echte koffie kunnen drinken in plaats van instant koffie.

We haven’t really met a lot of people yet. We’ll try to contact the school tomorrow and arrange things with them. The first impression is that people are really friendly and helpful. Being here really reminds me of being in Mexico, it sort of looks the same and the weather is similar and the nature and the people being so friendly and helpful… even Spanish words come back to mind:) Pretoria is really big and it’s hilly and is really green! Im sure there will be more about that later, but thought you’d be interested in it now :)

We hebben nog niet heel veel mensen ontmoet. Morgen proberen we contact met de school te maken om dingen met hun te regelen. De eerste indruk is dat mensen hier heel erg vriendelijk en behulpzaam zijn. Hier te zijn herinnert me heel erg aan Mexico! Het ziet er een beetje hetzelfde uit, hetzelfde soort weer en ook de natuur en de mensen zijn vergelijkbaar. Er komen zelfs weer allerlei Spaanse woorden terug in mn hoofd! Pretoria is erg groot en uitgestrekt dus alles is ver weg. Het is heuvelachtig en erg groen! Later zal er vast meer over te vertellen zijn, maar ik dacht dat jullie hier vast wel in geïnteresseerd waren!
