Frans' visit and Pilanesberg!

We barely started our normal Cornerstone College life again, or Frans our mentor from the University of Utrecht, came to visit us. His visit was great fun! It made us realize how much we are integrated here already, and how proud we are of everything: " our school, our children, our live, etc..." He observed as many lessons as possible and videotaped them. This can be quite confronting, but it's also fun. I had a real African lesson- outside! It was great fun for everybody, and it even worked out well (which can be seen on the video!:) My lessons aren't so much social studies lessons anymore as well biology lessons. Im teaching on the human reproductive system- in other words: sexual education. Great fun for the kids, even though they're too embarassed to really do something. I had a solution for this. I made a box and had little cards. Before we ever started I gave everyone a card and everyone had to ask at least one question about something related to sexual education and then put the question in the box. That way I had collected about 40 question, so had to come up with 40 answers. I typed out all the questions and answers and made little cards of them and made a quiz out of it. I mixed up the questions and the answers- divided the class into 4 groups and the group that had 10 matching questions and answers had won! Good that we were outside because it was quite noisy!! The main thing they learned from this was bribing... but luckily they had also learned other things for example that the birth control pill does not protect against STD's just prevent pregnancy. If interested: you can see the DVD when I'm back. Frans was with us from Thursday morning till Monday evening- so there was a weekend in between!! We have used this weekend very well! Saturday morning we got up at 4.30 and drove to Pilanesberg (a national park not that far from Pretoria) at 5. We were there around 7. We all thought (and expected) that all those stories from people telling about the animals surrounding the car are very exaggerating, but actually they are not! We were not even inside the park for 30 minutes when a whole herd of ' wildebees' (gnoe in english I think, at least it is gnoe in Dutch:) surrounded our car:
" yes, you can take my picture- go ahead!"

relaxed...
" is he aiming for us?"

" ehm..."
